Adelaide Botanic Gardens are three separate projects: a historic botanic garden in the heart of the city, the Mount Lofty Botanic Garden and Botanic Garden Wittunga.

The main botanical garden (with an area of ​​approx. 34 ha) was founded in 1857. Here you can see plants from all around the world, as well as a few trees planted by the century before last! In the garden was created and is maintained now very favorable for plants subtropical climate (average temperature is 28 degrees). And the abundance of sunny days can get along with plants from different regions of the earth: and those that love moisture, and those from the mountains, steppe and even desert. Incidentally, in the garden you can see the whole grove of Russian birch.

The first glass greenhouse was built at the Botanic garden specifically for the cultivation of a unique Victorian water lily in 1868. The process of flowering even hit the front pages of local newspapers!

The second big greenhouse – "House of Palms" – was built in 1877. Greenhouse is notable not only an extensive collection of Madagascan savannah plants, but also for its architecture in the Victorian style.

In 1996, the National Test Rose Garden was opened at the Botanical Garden – the first in Australia garden, where roses are tested for suitability for the Australian climate. Roses, by the way, are amazing – noisette roses, roses bourbon, tea, etc.

Furthermore, at the Botanic Garden you can visit the Mediterranean garden of aquatic plants, to admire the blossoming lotus and learn about the history of plant cultivation in the local museum. And you can just sit on the lawn under a tree and relax, forgetting that you're in the heart of a noisy city. Each year, the Botanical garden of Adelaide is visited by more than 1,5 million people. Admission is free.

Adeliade Botanic Gardens

Second botanic garden is located in half of an hour from the center of Adelaide on the eastern slope of Mount Lofty. Park received its first visitors in 1977 – whereas in an area of ​​80 hectares can be acquainted with the plants of temperate climate. Today the garden is divided into seven valleys, each of which raises certain groups of plants. And it has representatives of almost all climate zones in the world – magnolias, rhododendrons, camellias, roses, peonies, Australian ferns, exotic hardwoods and conifers. The highlight of the garden is a stunning view over the valley of Adelaide, opening from height of 180 meters above sea level.

Finally, the third Wittunga botanic garden, reopened to the public in 1975, represents a collection of plants from Australia and South Africa. South African specimens were collected in the Cape Province of South Africa, the climate is very similar to Australia. Collection of Australian plants is collected from the peninsula Floro, Kangaroo Island and the territories of Western Australia.
