Art Gallery of South Australia is the main cultural institution of South Australia. Located in the "cultural quarter" of Adelaide – in the vicinity of the State Library of South Australia, the South Australian Museum and the University of Adelaide – the gallery presents world-famous rich collection of Australian art, primarily indigenous, and European and Asian. Annually, more than half a million people visit the gallery to see 35,000 of its exhibits – the second largest art collection in the country. Among the exhibits are paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, photographs, textiles, ceramics, stones and even furniture!

Art Gallery of South Australia

Gallery was opened in 1881 and until 1967 was known as the "National Gallery of South Australia". Gallery funds grew and expanded, so that in 1996 had to move to a new building in the style of the Victorian era. The main exhibition galleries – landscapes and portraits of the 18-19 centuries – is updated every three years. A special place is occupied by a collection of paintings of British artists, which is considered one of the most complete outside the UK. Visitors to the gallery will be able to admire paintings by Van Dyck, Gainsborough, Turner, Renoir. It is worth paying attention to the collection of drawings and engravings by old masters – one of the richest in the world! It includes works by Dürer, Titian, Rubens, Rembrandt, Goya, Tintoretto, etc.
