By Thursday afternoon six protesters were left on the roof of one building, with one man threatening suicide before being hauled from the edge of a roof by the remaining asylum seekers.

One protester, known as Majid, told AAP via telephone no more violence was planned.

"No no, I don't think there will be more violence," he said.

But Mr Bowen said the detainees involved at Villawood risked having their claims denied if they hadn't already been rejected.

"I will be applying the character test to those who may have been involved in this incident and I will be applying it vigorously," he told reporters in Newcastle.

He said that while there wasn't yet a dollar figure on the damage caused he expected it would be "substantial" and could run into the millions.

There have been reports roof tiles were thrown at firefighters during the riot, which started about 11.30pm on Wednesday.

Detainees had claimed the firefighters aimed hoses at them.

Chief superintendent Marcus Barker of Fire and Rescue NSW told reporters outside the centre on Thursday the hoses were used only to control fires in three burning buildings and he refused to comment on reports roof tiles were hurled at firefighters.

The Villawood unrest is the second upheaval at a detention centre in six weeks.

In March there was a violent protest at the Christmas Island detention centre in which as many as 300 detainees rioted and reportedly burned down accommodation tents and small buildings.

This second incident has opened up the federal government to fresh criticism from the opposition and its partners in government, the Greens.

"Crimes were committed last night again in Villawood, and the Australian people expect this government to take control of the detention network," coalition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison told reporters in Sydney.

Federal Greens immigration spokeswoman Sarah Hanson-Young said the protest was a symptom of failures within the system. She called on the government to act.

Earlier, NSW premier Barry O'Farrell raised concerns about a lack of arrangements between the state and federal government to deal with detention centre riots.

NSW police were reportedly unable to enter the centre for four hours when they were called at about 11.30 Wednesday night, because the centre is housed on commonwealth land.

Mr O'Farrell said he would raise the lack of emergency response arrangements with Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

Later, the immigration department said detainees were being given cold food, such as sandwiches, and water.

A temporary kitchen was being flown up from Melbourne overnight so hot meals could be provided.

"At this stage, there are no plans to move people off site," the department said in a statement.

"Damage to accommodation blocks appears to be minor.

"However, the department is working with police to fully assess the extent of the damage to the centre."

A police investigation would be conducted to identify the detainees involved.

The Prime Minister outlined her vision in The Weekend Australian newspaper in an interview in Tokyo on Friday, saying she's open to exploring the idea of Japan's soldiers gaining direct experience from their more combat-ready Australian peers, 66 years after World War Two.

The Australian reported last year that Japan's Defence Minister Toshimi Kitizawa is keen for Japanese troops to draw on the combat experience that Diggers have gained in East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Ms Gillard says she's yet to receive a formal proposal, but supports the idea being discussed by the defence and foreign ministers of each country.

Although Japan's post-war military is restricted to self-defence and peacekeeping operations, Tokyo is keen to boost its combat readiness in response to a more powerful China and the growing threat of North Korea.

2 out of 3 employers expect staff to be on call

Expected even during holidays, after hours

"Mobile technology has created a culture"

TWO out of three employers expect their staff to be on call during holidays and outside of work hours.

Mobile phones, iPads and home internet connections are enabling 58 per cent of employees to stay connected to work to meet their boss's expectations or ease stress about returning from a break.

But only 13 per cent of workers will be paid the overtime for their extra efforts.

Recruitment firm Robert Half International's latest Workplace Survey reveals 68 per cent of employers expected employees to be available for work to some degree while on annual leave or outside of office hours.

Director Andrew Brushfield said many employees had been looking forward to the long Easter weekend but would struggle to completely switch off.

"Mobile technology has created a culture where employees are always connected to work and many find it difficult to strike a balance," he said.

"While some employers are putting pressure on their staff to log on when they're on holiday, many employees are also choosing to do so, to reduce their workload when they get back to the office."

Almost two-thirds, or 63 per cent, of employees check work emails so they are less stressed when they return to work.

But about half of all employees who stay connected like being able to stay on top of work issues while away.

Nurse Jane Farquharson, 36, said being on call was part of the job but it did mean she "held the phone continuously, just in case".

She and husband Aaron, also a theatre nurse, work Monday to Friday and are given on-call rosters about a week in advance.

Their on-call days and number of shifts also vary week-to-week.

When on call, work must always be within about a 20-minute commute and the short notice could make it hard to plan recreational activities, she said.

"Mobile phones probably gives us a bit more freedom (than pagers or home phone) to go off and do things, rather than be tied to the home phone," she said. "But I've been holding the phone for 10 years at least. It's something we've got used to."

She said they did get paid a little extra for being on call but it was not lucrative

The protests began last Friday after Emad Mikhail, a former Cairo police commander, was appointed governor of Qena, the second Coptic Christian governor in a row.

The protesters' motivations appear to vary but the presence of hardline Islamists has raised sectarian tensions in the province, which has a large Christian population and a history of religious strife.

Police officials said the protesters gathered in front of the governor's headquarters and reinforced demonstrators already camped out on a railway track after Friday prayer sermons exhorted them to end the sit-in.

Some of the protesters said they should have been consulted in the appointment of a new governor, especially one with a background in the country's vilified police force.

State television aired interviews with protesters who denied they were Islamists, but a Coptic Bishop in the province said the demonstrators have been heard chanting anti-Christian slogans.

"The protests are sectarian," Bishop Kirilos of the nearby town of Nagaa Hammadi told AFP.

"They are led by Salafis and the Muslim Brotherhood, and they are chanting: 'We won't leave until the Christians leave,'" he said.

The bishop, who was present when Muslim gunmen killed six churchgoers after an evening mass in January 2010, said parishioners were fearful of further attacks.

But a prominent Salafi cleric in Cairo, Abdel Moneim al-Shahat, denied that his sect, which advocates a return to early Muslim practices, was spearheading the protests.

"People object to him because he has a security background, and also because he was appointed as though for a Coptic quota, and Qena always gets the quota Christian," he said.

"My religion forbids me from being ruled by a Christian, but if he were popular I would be willing to set aside my religious objection," he said.

Many traditional Muslim scholars believe a Christian or a woman may not rule a Muslim country.

The government has unsuccessfully tried to persuade the demonstrators to disperse by sending two prominent Salafi clerics to negotiate with them along with the interior minister.

State television reported that Prime Minister Essam Sharaf was preparing to head a delegation to the southern city to defuse the crisis.

Copts make up about 10 per cent of the country's 80 million people and have been the targets of attacks.

The protests in Qena have served as a stark reminder to some of the persistence of sectarian tensions after a popular revolt ousted president Hosni Mubarak in February.

Telecoms billionaire Nagib Sawaris, who launched a liberal party after Mubarak's ouster, wrote on his Twitter account that the protests showed a Christian would stand little chance of becoming the country's president.

"To those who said I should run for president: if we can't even have a Copt as Qena governor, what about Egypt?," he wrote.

April 13, 2011 at 11:30 am in the town of Avoca Beach, which is an hour's drive from Sydney, was flooded and turned into an artificial reef and diving attraction for the Australian Navy frigate «Adelaide» (HMAS Adelaide).

The frigate was stand up in the U.S. and admitted to the Australian Navy in 1980. During his 27-year career, the ship three times was in the Persian Gulf and has twice been in East Timor. Frigate «Adelaide» was officially decommissioned in 2008 due to reduced costs.

The idea to flood the ship offered non-governmental organization on the creation of artificial reefs Central Coast Artificial Reef Project (CCARP). The calculations predict additional revenue to local tourist operators in size from 2.4 to 23 million of Australian dollars a year.

Before flooding, the ship was cleared of environmentally harmful substances, on what was spent two million Australian dollars. However, some local residents were against flooding, claiming that the lead-based paint on the casing of the vessel in total weight is about three tons, which will have a negative impact on the ecological situation in the Gulf.

Why flood the ships?

to create an artificial reef (new ecosystem)

for research

recovery of fish stocks

to promote tourism

During the past 10 years in Australia have been flooded several ships, including:

Western Australia – HMAS Swan and HMAS Perth

South Australia – HMAS Hobart

Queensland – HMAS Brisbane

Tasmania – The Troy D

Victoria – HMAS Canberra

New South Wales – HMAS Adelaide

The site of a flooded ship is already established , which has a lot of information about the project.

Canberra = 345.257

Hobart = 209.287

Darwin = 120.652

It turns out that in large urban areas lives approximately 13.7 million people, representing 63.9% or two thirds of the population of Australia.

An average Australian population density is 2.8 persons per square kilometer, but at the Australian Capital Territory, this value reaches 147, and the smallest population density is at the Northern Territory, where at 1 square kilometer there are only 0.2 people.

The density of population in Sydney fluctuates (depending on the area) from 7.500 to 8.400 people per square kilometer, while in Melbourne this index is around 7.300.

By State (in thousand people):

In 1917 were released the first Australian passports – X Series. During the First World War passports helped to identify and keep track of soldiers crossing the borders of different countries.

Phrase «Australian Passport» appeared on the passport only in 1949, and before that used the inscription «British Passport». In the same year were released two series passports – «B Series» for use in Australia by the citizens of the UK and «C Series» only for citizens of Australia.

In 1950 30,000 Australian passports were granted.

50 years later, in 1999-2000, the number of passports granted was almost 1.45 million. On the production of so many passports were expended 37 tons of paper, 95,000 meters of yarns, 69,000 feet of gold leaf and more than a thousand litas glue.

Until 1983, a statement of married women for an Australian passports was supposed to be signed by the husband. In the same year it became possible to apply via Australia Post.

Initially, passports were filled manually, but in 1984 began using a computer print, and first in the world laminated pages.

Since 1986, the Australian children were getting separated from their parents' passports, in connection with the introduction of individual records of a citizen Australia (Single Identity).

In 2001 an Australian passport for the first time was able to be scanned and automatically read by a computer. Today, all applications for Australian passports are recognized and stored in the system automatically.

Since 2005, Australian passports include biometric information.

More than 60% of the population of the Earth has problems with sleep, i.e. insomnia. Sometimes insomnia is associated with diseases of internal organs (heart, thyroid, bronchus), sometimes it may even be the only symptom of depression. Yet often the cause of sleep problems is in the wrong mode, fatigue and inability to "switch off" the brain from daily problems. The mass of papers was written on the insomnia, and the people still as not enough sleep as well as not getting enough sleep. This time it took for naturopaths in Australia. They argue that it is the symbiosis of the proposed councils would give the desired effect is you finally start to sleep at night and not anywhere late in the morning.

A specialist in the field of naturopathy Mim Beim said that she and colleagues developed a simple seven rules for a good sleep, based on the principles of modern medicine and traditional healing methods. So …

1. Keep in the medicine cabinet "sleeping grass". "Unlike sleeping pills, herbal soothing herbal teas and tinctures are not addictive", – said Dr. Beim. – Therefore, to achieve the desired effect, you should take the "sleep-grass" twice: after dinner and before bedtime. Gentle but effective soporific effect have valerian, hops, lemon balm, motherwort, peony. You can take a mono-infusion – to 30-40 drops, but you can try to combine the herbs themselves (as to total no more than 30-40 drops) and choose the best composition. But you should remember that all sedative herb lowers blood pressure.

2. A light supper before retiring. For those who do not eat after six in the evening, night's sleep is worse – more superficial and alarming. The fact that in sleep the brain need fuel. So the best option – a light supper in half an hour before bedtime with a small amount of carbohydrates. This will increase the levels of serotonin and normalizes blood sugar levels, which generally has a calming effect on the body. Therefore, old-fashioned cup of hot milk with honey at night, a piece of cheese and biscuits, or half a banana will fall at an opportune moment.

3. Remember the "sleep hygiene". Not so important to force yourself to go bed at 10 pm . Yet we understand that for the modern working man it is practically impossible. But that's just to go to sleep at the same time is the most important. And the worst – "hill" mode. Go to sleep each day to a aired on the night room. But before bedtime, avoid large strenuous exercises and watching movies with disturbing music (just churning intonation worrying sleep).

4. Do not drink before bedtime. This is important. Despite the fact that alcohol has a relaxing effect, should abandon this practice. "Alcohol breaks the cycle of sleep, particularly sleep with rapid eye movement, when people go to dream – saw a naturopath Mim Beim. – This means that the body is not able to completely relax and rejuvenate".

5. Running and biking – in the morning, yoga – at night. Special exercises will help to improve you sleep. The active loads (running, cycling, treadmill, weight trainers) should be performed in the morning. A class aimed at the gradual stretching of the muscles and restore breathing (yoga, pilates and tai chi), it makes sense to move to the evening. This will help reassure not only the body but also to "switch" from the daily concerns of the brain.

6. Bath caresses your skin and … cheats the brain! Specialists have found that the deepest sleep occurs when body temperature is less than the average day. Typically, this happens in the morning. If you cleared up at night and sleep either in one eye, try to trick the brain. Convince it that the body is immersed in the realm of sleep, you can use a warm bath or shower, which artificially reduces the body temperature.

7. To regulate daily rhythm in the human body helps the hormone melatonin, produced by the pineal gland of the brain. "Shift work, frequent flights and poor sleep affects levels of melatonin – says Dr. Beim. – Therefore, for adjustment the internal clock the hormone can be administered in tablets. But assign it only has a sleep physician or neurologist.
